Acne

Acne is an annoying condition. Why can’t we have the same perfect skin we had when we were 7 years old?

Starting around puberty, and continuing well into adulthood, many people develop acne. Acne occurs when a pore gets blocked with dead skin, dirt, oil or sebum, and bacteria begin to grow. Usually occuring on the face and neck, but also occuring on the chest, back and buttocks.

There are two types of acne: Inflammatory and non-Inflammatory acne. 

Non-Inflammatory Acne is seen as either a blackhead or a whitehead. Blackheads occur when a pore gets stuck open, and sebum (the body's natural oil) gets trapped just below the skin's surface - in the pore. Since sebum contains pigmented melanin, it looks black. When the sebum and oil get trapped farther below the skin's surface, it mixes with bacteria and looks white, hence the name whitehead.

To make matters worse, acne can become inflammatory acne if the follicle wall ruptures. When this happens, white blood cells enter to heal the blemish. Unfortunately, this makes the blemish grow in size and become painful to touch. When the white blood cells finally make their way to the surface of the skin, this is what we commonly call a "zit".
